Super Jeep Tour pt. 4: Þingvellir national park

Þingvellir was our last stop for the night before returning to Reykjavik. It was still light outside, but the sun had already set by the time we arrived there. Þingvellir is the site of Iceland's largest lake, Þingvallavtn, as well as the site of Iceland's first parliment in 930 AD. Þingvellir translates to "parliment fields." and is home to a "rift valley." Iceland is situated on the Mid-atlantic ridge. The west half of Iceland is on the North American plate, and the east on the Eurasian plate. At a rate of about 1 inch per year, these plates are moving apart and literally ripping Iceland in half.
