Super Jeep Tour pt. 1: Gullfoss

The tour we went on today is commonly referred to as the Golden Circle, and visits some of the most popular attractions in Iceland. The trip itself lasted most of the day broken into four major stops. The first was Gullfoss, followed by snowmobiling on Langjökull glacier. After that was Geysir with a final stop at Þingvellir National Park.

Let me just start out by explaining why they call it the Super Jeep Tour, and the best way to explain that is to simply show you a picture of our "tour bus." (If you look close enough you can see Ella sticking out her tongue... typical...)

Calling this vehicle a Jeep is a huge understatement. This hulking mass of American made steel is a one-ton 15 passenger Ford van. With Ella's snow boots and helmet on the tires still had her by a few inches, and she's just over three feet tall. And believe me it was necessary. BUT I'm getting ahead of myself. Back to Gullfoss.

We arrived at Gullfoss at around 10:30am, just before sunrise. Unfortunately because of the amount of daylight (or complete lack thereof) Iceland has this time of year the pictures look washed out. I did some bracketing (HDR) and I'll process those when I get home, hopefully I can get them to turn out a little better.

Gullfoss is the most breathtaking waterfall I have ever seen. Ever. It's certainly not the tallest or largest, but the way it stairsteps through the canyon is just gorgeous.

And it was COLD! They brag about being able to get close enough to feel the spray coming off the waterfall as it cascades through the canyon. I'm sure it's wonderful in July... NOT January.
